Matt Hill, Southwest Montana Community Federal Credit Union - Team Building & Civility
Matt describes himself as a guy who’s a gentle combination of thinker and doer, writer and conversationalist, reserved and boisterous, city kid and ranch guy, corporate and small town – all kinda roped together and sprinkled with curiosity and wonder, balanced with appreciation for history and hope for the future. He’s a lover of horses, old cars and college football.
His work and personal experiences continue to shape his approach to life, to people and to teams. Matt grew up in the Deep South, immersed in sports and southern culture. He was involved in student government and athletics throughout his educational years, through college graduation.
Although he studied to become an educator, Matt changed course after college, finding his way into sales, and eventually personal finance and banking. Working for companies like Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Household Finance Corporation and GlaxoSmithKline, he was immersed in large corporate culture that offered exposure to great leadership, tremendous development opportunities and top notch training. His venture into community banking provided a contrast to his prior experience with large companies, exposing him to the benefits and challenges of smaller teams. In 14 years of Community Banking/Lending, Matt has served as Loan Officer, Commercial Relationship Manager, Branch Manager and Community Bank Vice-President and President. He is a 2017 graduate of Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington.
Like many of us, Matt’s career has been dotted with differing teams, cultures and leaders, all presenting learning opportunities. Usually those experiences generated questions – Is there a difference between leadership and management? Can I be a manager AND a producer? Why do some teams perform and others don’t? What’s at the bottom of all of this “work” stuff that we all do? And sometimes, we even ask – How in the world did this person ever land in a leadership role?
On October 16, Matt will speak about his experiences, ideas and opinions as he covers the topics of Team Building and Civility as it relates to his experience as a team member, manager and leader. Some areas of conversation will include: Understanding ourselves and others through the Enneagram; Team dynamics and how to improve them; Cultivating civility within a team by remedying common dysfunctions; and (oddly) applying horsemanship principles to foster better relationships.
